Protesting the Apec protests

Apec is coming to Sydney just in case you have been living under a rock and did not know.

So with APEC come the inevitable protests. There has been a fair bit of media coverage in the last week about the various protests to be staged. We have The Stop Bush Coalition, Stop Bush Stop Howard. Also planned are a protest by a Vietnamese community group and a student strike/protest involving high school kids. I have no idea what the first two groups hope to achieve apart from maybe getting their faces on television as for the second two I have no idea what they are protesting for.

Why do people even bother with protests? This isn’t France. By and large protests achieve nothing. Here is some news for you anti bush people. He is not going to change anything he does because you go out marching. You are wasting your time. Not only that you are wasting the time of those who work in the city and will be disrupted by your pointless exercise.

Furthermore every time I hear of some protest, the organiser (invariably a hippie arts student) says the protest will be peaceful yet the protest always ends violently. This is always the police’s fault apparently.

These protests piss me off so much that I am tempted to organise a protest against the protest then I remember that protesting is by and large a waste of time.
