Cars vs Over the Hedge

Watched these two films back to back the other day and figured since they will be competing for your dollar over the school holidays I thought I'd give my opinion on which film you should take the children to. I am a pretty tough film critic so i’ll give you a comparison so you can understand what a good mark is and what a bad mark is.

Street Fighter with Van Damme and Kylie Minogue rates a 1 i.e. terrible film that should never ever be watched.

The Empire Strikes Back rates a 9 (the highest mark I will give as nothing is perfect) i.e. this film should be purchased for your collection and watched several times.

We’ll start with Cars.

This from http://www.imdb.com/

Lightning McQueen is a cocky, rookie race car. Speeding on his way to a big race, he crashes into Radiator Springs, destroying lots of the inhabitants belongings. In order to make up for what he did, the cocky roadster is sentenced to community service. Though he will do anything to get away from the work, McQueen must learn to respect and bond with the Radiator Springs inhabitants in order to get out of the town and back on the racetracks.

Pixars latest effort has awesome animation I’ll give it that, the attention to detail is great but for me the movie was just lacking something. The jokes were not all that funny and the sight gags were just meh. About half way through it becomes clear how the movie is going to pan out however there is a little twist in the ending which I enjoyed.

Like all cartoons these days there is a message. The message in this film is winning isn’t everything, don’t be selfish and interstate highways are ruining mid western towns (yes a thinly veiled political message)

Despite its shortcomings it is a good film and well worth the download, woops well worth going to the cinema and watching. The kids especially the boys will like it. This movie has been hyped to hell but for me it didn’t really live up to it. I give it a six out of ten (three of those marks are for the animation!)

Over the Hedge.

This from imdb...

Upon waking up after hibernation, a group of forest animals discover that a tall hedge has appeared out of nowhere, half their forest is gone, they have little to no food left. While Verne, a nervous turtle who acts as leader, suggests they simply adapt, RJ the raccoon shows up and gives them another option: go over the hedge and get food from the humans! The other forest animals quickly give into RJ, sneaking into the human world to get all the food they can grab. What they don't know is that RJ is actually in debt to a hungry bear, who has given him one week to replenish his food supply, or RJ takes its place!

This film has not had the publicity machine behind it that Cars has had but for a film that all the family will enjoy this is the better option. Dreamworks latest effort beats its competitor in everyway bar the animation. The characters are just easier to care about and the movie is hilarious. It has the message: don’t lie, family is important and the political message that we need to protect the habitat of our animals though it is less blatant than the message in Cars.

Over the Hedge gets my vote as more laugh for your megabyte, woops dollar and a rating of seven.

Football is STILL boring

I am still insane.

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity. Let me explain...

Well in 1998 I tried to get into the world cup and just couldn’t. In 2002 I tried again and the game just frustrated me, with the ridiculous dives these players take and the monotony of pass after pass with the ball never going anywhere. This year I have tried again, figuring it may be different because Australia is playing. Well after the bore fest of Netherlands Vs Germany and the sleep worthy England game I somehow don’t think a bunch of ex pats in green and gold is going to change the fact that Soccer is and always has been boring to watch.

I won’t be insane in regards to it and expect anything different in tonight’s game. I don’t think I will even watch it. After all, the highlights will be in a twenty second news blurb in the morning so I can spare myself an hour and half of boredom and catch the seconds of the game worth watching on Sky.

I wish Australia all the best in their endeavours but sorry lads I won't be watching

Now soccer/football lovers I am not denying that the players are great athletes with tremendous skills and are good at what they do. I am just saying that what they do is fucking boring. You don’t think so, well that’s fine; you are entitled to your opinion as am I.
